TCRA: Education crucial to curb cybercrime

DAR ES SALAAM: DUE to the increasing wave of cybercrime such as theft and fraud, the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has emphasized the importance of continuous education and sensitization on technology usage for society.

The Director of TCRA, Dr Jabiri Bakari stated this recently in Dar es Salaam, during a seminar to communications stakeholders toward the safer internet day commemoration.

Dr Bakari noted that despite the numerous benefits of communication technology, there is still a huge responsibility to continue educating individuals, who misuse the opportunity and other ICT-related opportunities by engaging in criminal activities.

“We have the duty to control and regulate them, but also to continue educating and helping those few individuals transition out of that group that makes the internet an inappropriate place, so that they can benefit from ICT,” Dr Bakari noted.

He added that the world has experienced a significant development in the global communication sector and Tanzania as well, noting that a large Tanzanian population, both urban and rural areas, has been reached by these communication services.

“The latest report, covering the quarter ending in December last year, shows that the number of internet users in our country has reached approximately 35.8 million, with the number of smartphones reaching 19.8 million. These statistics indicate significant growth in internet usage,” he said.

Furthermore, Dr Bakari acknowledged the accessibility and affordability of communication services that demonstrates the government’s commitment in creating a favorable environment and equipping citizens with the skills to benefit with the digital economy.

He called on every citizen to play a vital role in securing the online space through responsible usage, to benefit individuals and the community.

Ms Jackline Mwatenga, one of the Communication stakeholders from Mbweni Women Entrepreneurs who attended the workshop said that the seminar was crucial for them to enhance understanding and become good ambassadors in the community.

She added that there is a need to ensure the internet usage aligns with the country’s laws and avoid any challenges that might arise from non-compliance.

“Everything is now reliant on the internet, and as entrepreneurs, we use online platforms to reach our customers. It helps us in communication, so it is essential to know how to use these platforms. Also, not being aware of the law does not exempt you from legal consequences,” she said.

Mr Yahya Bakari Salehe, a transportation expert also noted that, there have been numerous incidents that occur in their field, therefore, the strategies in collaboration with TCRA comes as a right solution to address the challenges.

He added that the seminar has provided them with knowledge to understand the meaning of using the internet, and its significance in business growth.

“The internet has helped me expand my business because nowadays, many aspects of life have become digital, and therefore, using the internet helps me broaden my business opportunities, “He said.

Despite an increase in fraud incidents, TCRA has implemented measures like blocking SIM cards and providing education to combat cybercrime, as stated in their quarterly report for December last year.

The TCRA quarterly report revealed that a total of 21,788 fraud incidents were recorded, compared to 12,603 cases reported in the same period in 2022.
