TTB told of need to tap tourists from virgin Nile Basin region

The Tanzania Tourism Board (TTB) has been advised to review its marketing strategy so as to attract more tourists from within the Nile basin region.

The advice was issued by Edwin Muzahura, Uganda Tourist Board’s (UTB) Head of Marketing and Public Relations, at the just-ended workshop for journalists in the Nile Basin.

He said the Board should formulate a vigorous marketing plan which would involve sharing large amounts of information on the country’s tourist attractions with other tourist boards across the region.

He said this would help to unlock Tanzania’s tourist potential to neighbouring countries in that people in the region would know exactly what the country has to offer and the most convenient ways to visit the tourist sites.

The training was organised by Broadcasting Board of Governors with the support from US Government.

“Most people in the region know Tanzania as a peaceful country with hospitable citizens and a few landmarks. I myself knew little about the Serengeti National Park, which I visited long ago,” he said.

Besides, most Ugandans are not familiar with many of the tourist attractions in Tanzania including the rates charged.

“As institutions dealing with tourism issues, we need to share marketing information and have exchange programme so that people can know different tourists attractions,” he said.

According to TTB’s Acting Managing Director Devotha Mdachi, tourism has made an affirmative contribution to the country's economy with an outstanding performance compared to previous year.

Some of the country’s major attractions include Serengeti National Parks which is the 7th new wonder of the world and home to the “Great Animal Migration” that was named the New 7th Wonder of the World, by USA Today and ABC TV's Good Morning America.

Others include the world acclaimed Ngorongoro Crater, Olduvai Gorge, Selous game reserve, Ruaha National Park.
