In a move to stimulate agricultural development, the Maendeleo Bank will before end of this year support over 20 groups of youth in Dar es Salaam and Coast Region, who intend to engage in the use of green house technology that is aimed at improving yields particularly vegetables.

Speaking to this paper in an interview soon after presenting a donation of bedsheets and mattreses to Temeke hospital, the bank’s Managing Director Ibrahim Mwangalaba said   the bank is currently in talks with some experts who will advise the best way of its practice.

“After completion of each and every thing we will support youths from the two regions in the green house technology. The move aims to boost their income,” he said.

He said with the technology, farmers control atmospheric conditions to grow different crops, with application of drip irrigation in order to increase their yields.

“I encourage more youth to join groups and adopt this technology as well. If this can be adopted across the country, it would enhance food security,” he added.

He said with the application of drip irrigation in green house, water resources are effectively targeted on plants leading to high produce.

He noted that with drip irrigation water is allowed to drop on to a plant through the pipe to small outlets called emitters that aim to water soil around the plant roots.

“Green house technology can enable a tomato farmer to produce 4.8 tonnes of tomatoes in eight months, leading to increased profitability.
