The Vice President, Dr Mohamed Ghalib Bilal, is expected to award the best manufacturer in this year’s President Manufacturer of the Year Awards (PMAYA) competitions in an event slated for Saturday. A statement released on Tuesday by the Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) said just as it has been the case in the past the awarding event will be held in Dar es Salaam. PMAYA aims to recognize and appreciate the important role of the industrial sector in Tanzania’s economic development process,” the statement said. For the past nine consecutive years, according to the statement, CTI has been staging this most prestigious members’ event covering all sectors of production and services. It said the main objective of the President’s Manufacturer of the Year Awards competitions is to pay tribute and recognize the pertinent role of the industrial sector’s contribution to the national economy and to encourage and motivate investors. Another objective, the statement said, is to publicise the importance of the industrial sector in Tanzania, raise the standard of business practices and promote sound corporate governance in Tanzania and to acknowledge and take stock of technological advancements in the sector. “This award aim at promoting Research and Development activities in the sector, to enhance competitiveness in the industrial development and promote exports of products and services,” it said. Further, the statement mentioned benefits that accrue to participants of the PMAYA competition to include benchmarking with other businesses in areas of operations, catalysing company investment in various developments as per the criteria of the competition and channelling participation in the presidential award giving ceremony and benefit from its networking potential. In selecting the winners for the awards, assessment criteria are used as Industrial Groupings Under each sub sector, and industries are placed in three broad categories based on annual turnover, capital investment and number of employees. Participating companies are grouped under the following sub-sectors, Beverages, Building and Construction, Chemicals and Chemical Products, Energy, Electrical (machinery, equipment, services) and Electronics, Finance, Insurance, Real Estate & Consultancy Services and Food Processing.
