This was revealed by Tanesco’s director general Felchesmi Mramba before reporters yesterday.

Mr Mramba was touring Mtwara Region to respond to various complaints from customers, particularly chronic problem of unreliable electricity supply.

Addressing journalists at the regional commissioner’s officer, Mr Mramba said apart from Mozambique, they had received applications for the gas fired electricity from several neighbouring countries.

He said, it was on that basis that Tanesco embarked on massive improvement of electricity infrastructure to ensure reliable power supply.

He said Tanesco was set to build a gas powered plant to ensure adequate supply of electricity for home use and export to other countries.

“We will build gas power plant to increase electricity supply for export and home uses. We are also going to repair the electricity infrastructure,” he said.

He also said they were planning to build a transmission line of 132kw to connect electricity from Mtwara to Lindi and another 400kw to connect Mtwara and Ruvuma.

After completion of such works, the regions of Mtwara, Lindi and Ruvuma will be integrated into the national grid.

For her part, Mtwara regional commissioner Mwamtumu Mahiza said since she took office there has been 35 electricity cuts without notice from Tanesco.

Despite having a gas fired electricity plant, Mtwara town has been facing chronic problems of power cuts.

This trend has been disrupting many social services including health, water, grain milling and shops.
